Caregiver: A Tribute to Motherhood

Caregiver is a deeply personal project that explores the relationship between a child and their mother through the medium of fashion and performance art. This work is dedicated to my mother and reflects my childhood perception of her protective presence.

The Concept

Silhouette of a square form dedicated to my mother. I wanted to embrace and talk about how I perceived my mother as a child. My mother always wore large ponchos and denim skirts, often a skirt over pants. She seemed monumental to me, I felt protection and support, hence I created a poncho that is stiff, reminiscent of an armor that gives shelter.

Materials and Meaning

I used materials that I got from her a very long time ago, they are materials from my grandmother, my mother's mother. The monumentality and hardness of the silhouette is meant to symbolize my respect for the Mother who protects.

The Design

The poncho design reflects the protective qualities I associated with my mother's clothing choices. The stiff, armor-like construction serves as both a physical and symbolic representation of the shelter and support she provided.

Personal Reflection

This project represents my attempt to capture and honor the feeling of safety and protection that my mother's presence gave me during childhood. Through the use of family materials and the creation of a protective garment, I explore the deep emotional connection between caregiver and child.
